Meeting Standards for Electronic Devices: An Update on Electromagnetic Compatibility and Interference

March 2, 2012 at 2:03 am Leave a comment

Electronic devices can be found everywhere, from the smallest hearing aid to the biggest trucks and airliners. These products are increasingly electronic in nature and to ensure these products work in harmony when they are in the vicinity of each other and other equipment, the design and operation of these products must meet certain standards.

Some devices transmit signals, some devices receive signals, and other devices like the cellphone, send and receive signals at the same time. The devices may also be sending or receiving signals intentionally or unintentionally, like in interference.

In all these cases, the electronic product must work properly or else they will not be marketable or worse, they can hamper the proper use and even safety of other devices and users.

Last March 2, 2012, a Kape + Teknolohiya  session was organized by AyalaTBI-Ayala Foundation  with the Electronics Industries Association of the Philippines, Inc.  (EIAPI)  on the latest in electromagnetic compatibility, electromagnetic interference and susceptibility or EMC, EMI/EMS for short, at the UP-AyalaLand TechnoHub.

Mr. ChinPoh NG from Singapore and his local counterpart Larry Mirasol both from Rohde & Schwarz, one of the vendors in this test and measurement field gave the talk attended by EIAPI members. EIAPI, Ayala Foundation and UP-AyalaLand TechnoHub are grateful to Rohde and Schwarz for sharing the insights on EMC testing and how a testing laboratory for the industry can be set up.

This event is part of EIAPI’s activities with the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) to set up a common product development center that will house design and development tools and equipment for electronics hardware and software development and testing. This center will help electronics companies in the Philippines design and manufacture electronic products that can pass local and international standards tests in this field.
